A Mom's Guide to Nurturing Teen and Tween Skin
The ABCs of Skincare
Hey there, lovely moms! As you navigate the rollercoaster ride of raising teenagers and tweens, helping them establish good skincare habits is a gift that keeps on giving. I'm Allyson, your clean beauty advocate, and I'm here to guide you through crafting a skincare reference guide that both you and your kids can cherish. Let's dive into the ABCs of skincare together!
A is for Awareness
Teaching your teens and tweens about the importance of skincare is like planting a seed of confidence that will bloom over time. Open up a conversation about how skincare isn't just about appearance—it's about self-care and self-respect.
B is for Basics
Start with the essentials. Break down the routine into manageable steps:
Cleanse: Explain why cleansing their face morning and night is crucial to remove dirt, pollution, and excess oil. A clean canvas sets the stage for healthy skin. I recommend using a clean wash cloth each time you wash your face. Inexpensive wash cloths can be purchased at Target.
2. Hydrate: Emphasize the importance of hydration. Moisturizing helps maintain the skin's balance, keeping it supple and youthful.
3.. Treat (if needed): If they're dealing with specific skin concerns like breakouts, introduce them to gentle treatments. Keep it simple and avoid overwhelming them. If you teen or tween has persistent acne or oily skin, I would recommend a specific regimen designed for healing and preventing breakouts. Read more HERE.
4. Protect: Discuss the significance of sun protection. Sunscreen protects against harmful UV rays that can lead to premature aging, skin damage, and skin cancer. You may have a better chance of getting your teens and tweens to consistently wear tinted sunscreen because it’s a little like wearing a light makeup that gives a subtle glow. However, there are also safer, clear versions available (linked HERE). The non-negotiable is to wear a mineral-based sunscreen with the active ingredient of either Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide. Contrary to popular belief, wearing sunscreen will not cause breakouts.
C is for Clean Ingredients:
Educate them about the power of clean beauty. Discuss the dangers of synthetic fragrances, parabens, sulfates, and how choosing products with natural, safer ingredients can benefit their skin and their health in the long run. An app like Healthy Living on the Environmental Working Group website is fun and informative to check the products that you are currently using for safety concerns.
D is for Discipline:
Encourage consistency without being too strict. Remind them that, like anything worthwhile, skincare shows results when practiced regularly.
E is for Empowerment:
Empower your teens and tweens to make informed choices. Schedule a time with me to have a mother/daughter clean beauty class and together we can shop and select products suitable for their skin type.
F is for Fresh-Faced Friendies:
Introduce them to your community, their fellow Fresh-Faced Friendies, who are also exploring the world of clean skincare. Share stories of your journey and theirs, making them feel part of something bigger.
